Supermarket 'Loot'
Remember what I said about an increased consumption of snacks and nibbles during times of stress and anxiety?
Well, it has led me to a state of heightened attention whenever I enter the supermarket or a mini-mart. Seriously, I would go through the shelves and start picking out what I should stock up on.
It doesn't help that I am a supermarket addict. I have to go to the supermarket whenever I'm anywhere near one. When I'm at Raffles City, I'll pop by Jason's Marketplace, when at Suntec or Plaza Singapura, it's Carrefour, when at Tampines Mall, it's NTUC, and at Takashimaya, it's always Cold Storage, etc.
The list goes on but I shall stop lest I bore you all! I sometimes think that is it just me or am I like totally weird? Truth be told, I'd rather window shop at a supermarket than go shopping for clothes or shoes. I normally go girly shopping when I feel like I actually need to get new clothes or shoes. Supermarkets however are a different story - I can go to one even when I'm feeling full after dinner. Ask JF, he knows me well enough and I think it's sweet that he accompanies me and understands my 'obession' with supermarkets.
Anyway, enough about supermarkets and on to my 'loot'. Okay, I'm not exactly a thief or anything like that, but I did get some great stuff that I'd like to share with you...
Some of you might have tried them; if yes, great! If not, please go buy some... and for those who have better recommendations, you can always let me know! :)
If you've been reading my blog for quite a bit you'd know that I have a thing for chocolates so naturally I couldn't stay away from one which said the words "Dark Chocolate with Orange and Spices" (see the photo above). So I succumbed, and bought it.
How was it? It was great. I know it's supposed to be organic but can someone tell me if it's supposed to affect the taste? I didn't really think it made much difference but it's all right because I like the orange taste and the fact that Green & Black's paired it with dark chocolate. Mmmm..... Brown is good:
You can find them at Cold Storage and Jason's Marketplace. I think they only came to our shores this year. Read about them in the papers before.
Next, I want to rave about this japanese cracker/pastry thingie called Genji Pie:
Grace recommended to me and I just had to get some of my own. It's sold at the Isetan at Shaw Towers in Orchard Road.
I like it because it's very yummy and because of it's shape:
Everyone go 'Awww...' It's sweet ain't it? It's supposed to be heart shaped. Notice that it says there "Heart-warming Pie" on the packaging? These really look very much like palmiers ya know. But really, these are good to have with a cup of tea when you take a break from mugging for your exams. It's really light and flaky but not too overpowering. Me likes!
In case you can't read the fine print, here's what the makers of Genji pie have to say: "Genji pie is made from the finest ingredients, wheat flour, margarine, sugar and salt. This heart-shaped pie has been enjoyed since 1965. Why don't you make your tea time happier with Genji".
So there you have it, my latest supermarket 'loot'. I recently went to Mustafa Centre for the FIRST time! And I loved loved loved it. I bought quite a lot of stuff and finally found something I've been looking for, for ages! But I'll write about it in my next post. I have to go sleep now... and rush through my last research paper which is due on Monday. Wish me luck! tataz...
hi cheryl, was really suprised to see your comment on my choc banana cake post =) never thought you'd drop a msg at my blog. unless you tell me its not you :p
ReplyDeleteooh i absolutely love this chocolate. in fact, i have half a bar sitting in my pantry right now =)the orange spice just blends so beautifully with the gorgeous dark chocolate. i love their chocolate so much i emailed the G&B people to find out if they stocked it in Melbourne. Thankfully they did, at a store near me! The expresso chocolate isn't too great though. But their plain dark chocolate's just to die for.
ReplyDeleteby the way, i made the cake featured in your last post last night. Yum!
I'm facing the same situation too...Exam!!! Pimples popping out on every corner of my face :( & I tend to munch on everything that is edible in sight *sigh*
ReplyDeleteI have to agree with u that walking thru the aisles in the supermarkets is one of most enjoyable moments :) I like to look at the items displaying on the shelves...I can just browse thru everything in store all day without buying a single thing. Haha!
my gf and I totally love window shopping in the supermarkets too! altho we dont buy, just looking at all the goodies make us happy so I can totally understand how u feel. I think it's got to be a food blogger's thing :)
ReplyDeleteevan: yes it was me :) haha why were you surprised? I do like your blog! your baked stuff look sooo good..
ReplyDeletethecoffeesnob: totally agree! and i have to admit that it helps that the packaging is really cool and chic. oh you made the wholemeal chocolate cake? it tastes great doesn't it?
Shirley: haha yea man! and somemore i have no time to run as often... and i feel so unfit! ya supermarket shopping is loads of fun!
Yummie Dummies: Yea I do think so! ya ya.. i love checking out the variety and beautiful packaging and 'exotic' flavours etc.. pure exhilaration...
I love Green and Blacks dark choccie! I used to eat them a lot because they are also under the "FairTrade" prog.. but now they are owned by Nestle.. so I'm not sure if i should have them anymore.. hehe
ReplyDeletei loveeee going to the supermarket. i'm the kind who goes in wanting to buy one thing but comes out with 5. haha.
ReplyDeleteand the jap biscuits look so cute! i think it's called palmiers in french. i'll keep a lookout for that. :)
oops sorry now then i realised that you mentioned about palmiers. :p
ReplyDeleteHi Cheryl!
ReplyDeleteI am exactly the same and have to walk into a supermarket whether I am near one. My gym is located in Paragon so I wander into Paragon market place every so often just to looks at food. It is an obsession:)
hey, I love that G&B choc too. Have the exact same chocolate bar in my fridge now :D Its a cheaper alternative to valrhona's Manjari choc!
ReplyDeleteGlad to find like-minded people! I love browsing supermarkets as well, I can spend hours just looking at the snacks and desserts (ok, as well as dissecting their nutritious information)
ReplyDeleteEspecially after my yoga class, I would pop over to Jason's at Paragon which is the earliest to open along Orchard Road at 9am and just....browse. They have fantastc stuff as well.
The Green and Black's Dark Chocolate with Orange & Spices was fabulous. I have also discovered another special chocolate at the Candy Empire at Vivo City - the Whittaker's Spicy Ginger Block in Dark Chocolate. That was great. Please go check it out!
Wow never knew that many people love going to supermarkets. Me and my wife LOVE supermarkets - we were in the UK recently for 20 days and must have visited 30-40 supermarkets - jut to buy water, bread, ham (all sorts that you cannot get here), check the local stuff etc etc.
ReplyDeleteOver here, of course, we must spend much more time in supermarkets than all the other shops put together.
Cheryl, glad you found Mustafa - they have more variety than almost any other supermarket. e.g. Kellogg's corn flakes from the UK (not the inferior local stuff). I also get garlic powder, saffron etc there. And if you cooking Indian - I have never seen so many brands of basmati, dhal etc in any other supermart in Singapore. Only downside is the width of the aisles and the weekend crowds.
hi cheryl!
ReplyDeletemy goodness... my poor friend roy obviously doesn't know what he's missing. allow me to apologise for his lack of wit yesterday. haha. your bake-stuff, especially the WCACC, looks *absolutely* delectable, can't wait for your next Bake Sale! you inspire me to break out the flour, eggs and butter, except AIA isn't willing to insure my house against fire anymore...
p.s. haunting supermarkets is also my thing, usually in the middle of some post-exam-day stupor with absolutely nothing to do... stumbling around, reading labels...
i've been eating alot lately too, but not cuz of stress. dont know why, and i've even lost weight, which never happens to me. i always eat like a pig
ReplyDeleteHahaha sounds so much like me! I love grocery shopping too much, its actually a hobby! But ever since I buy things only I need, Ive been saving lots! Close to 1k now, lol!!
ReplyDeleteWow, I didn't know so many of us had the same hobby of browsing supermarkets! I thought my gf n I were weirdos haha. Btw, Lindtz have come up with loads of chocolates now for the upcoming festive season n most of them look super duper nice!
ReplyDeleteI just love Dark Chocolate with Orange and Spices. The chocolate and orange combination is one of my all time favorites. I have to stay out of the supermarkets, though, spend too much,..eat too much...
