No-fuss Oyakodon
Yesterday evening, I cooked dinner.
What's the big deal about cooking dinner you ask?
Haha... the difference is whether you're cooking for yourself, your best buds or your boyfriend's parents.
And yep, you might have guessed as much... I cooked for JF and his family yesterday.
I gotta admit, I was a bit nervous. I mean, what if they don't like my food? And you know food can make some people love you or hate you. It's true! I'm not kidding... :p
Thing is, JF's parents only like Asian food. They are also not very adventurous when it comes to food. They'll only eat what's familiar. And geez, as for me, I hardly cook Asian! Also, I'm always very adventurous when in the kitchen. I love trying out new recipes and new cuisines. Think cous cous and hummus! Sooo... can you imagine? I had the challenge of coming up something that would definitely win over the tastebuds of even the young and old.
Then, suddenly I remembered Lina telling me how she recently tried this easy peasy Japanese dish that was as yummy as it was a breeze to make. Now, Lina doesn't cook much and given a choice she'd rather eat out or have instant noodles for dinner so if SHE says it's easy, then it's got to be easy!
You know what I think? I think she's damn spot-on. Not only was it idiot-proof, it was also delicious. I love the miracles of mirin. Yes, I've heard loads about this Japanese seasoning but have never got down to using it, until now!
So, with my amazing mirin (bought from Dasio at IMM at only $2. you def. should head there to get any japanese stuff you want! everything there is only $2) and recipe, I managed to conquer my fear and just dive in.
Guess what? I think his parents liked it. Or at least that's what he told me. Well that's good news I suppose. I actually think it tasted very much like it's supposed to (from what I recall). Damn do I love the Japanese. Not only they have the cutest and most creative creations (from toys to gadgets), they have such amazing food! Oh by the way, you can have your oyakodon with normal rice like I did (didn't have time to get sushi rice)....
Speaking of Japanese; I just bought a bamboo sushi mat and I'm definitely gonna make some sushi soon. In fact, I'm going to cook Japanese curry tomorrow for my cousin and sister - yay.
Anyway if you're wondering about the Oyakodon recipe, Lina got it from an online forum which has plenty of fuss-free recipes for people who are looking for an easy meal. Go check it out: HERE. Try making your own Oyakodon and tell me what you think!
